Heart’s Longing

“It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living. I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.” – Oriah

I deeply believe in finding work that is fulfills your soul, and then taking the leap to actually go and do it. I have spent a lot of time figuring out what I am pulled to do and slowly have begun making it real.

Once I became a mom my priorities shifted. I wanted to have time with Luca and space to do things that really make me happy.  I resigned from my job teaching dance and put my health coaching practice to the side to focus on what really lights me up: making things + teaching yoga.

So that’s what I’m doing while Luca naps, when I have some help, or after we put him to bed. I feel so grateful to have finally located this sweet spot, and I have no doubt it will shift and change as I do the same. But it is extremely satisfying knowing I’m on the right path for right now.

It was scary to begin, to claim what I wanted, to change my mind again. And it required faith, support, and a lot of journaling and trusting through the doubts.

If you find that you are asking yourself some of these questions and are want to feel completely aligned with what your heart wants and what you are actually doing – here are some women and resources that really helped me along the way:

  • Jeanne Grabowski : I worked with Jeanne for 9 months and she really helped me figure out how to be true to myself and to do what it is I was put on this earth to do.
  • Caitlin Fitzgordon : I ran into Caitlin, my former birth teacher, during a tumultuous transition back to NYC. Working with her helped me navigate the challenge of motherhood and growing a business while creating supportive container to find clarity and confidence in my work.
  • Danielle Van de Kemenade : I met Danielle while living in Frankfurt, and she simply ROCKS. She creates useful experiences (virtual or in person) to help people find their ‘heart work’. I love reading her blog, and taking her e-courses. She has a new one coming up : A Year of Heart Work – which is not to be missed if you are wanting a work / life that is exciting and meaningful.
  • Braid Creative : I love reading their posts and gathering up any wisdom I can from these creative ladies. I took a Personal Branding e-course which was super insightful and have been enjoying their new podcast : Being Boss.

I am forever grateful for these examples and the incredibly rich content they put into this world to help keep me on track.  And this little guy also helps.

So what do you want? Give yourself the time and space to ask, then get quiet enough to listen, and be bold enough to trust.

Dear Luca,

It is an honor to be your mom.

Thank you for your slobbery kisses and infectious laughter. Thank you for your daily forgiveness and endless patience. Thank you for your curiosity and constant reminders to be present. Thank you for giving me permission to follow my dreams and create alongside of you. Thank you for letting me help you grow into a most incredible human being.

Design Your Vision

Posted | 0 comments

It’s never too late to design your vision. There is always time.

You can do it the first of the year, the first of the month, every full moon, new moon, morning, end of the week, or beginning of the week. The opportunity to pause, ground, and reflect are endless.

All it takes is commitment and curiosity to ask yourself the question: What do I want? And then open yourself to receive the answer.

I want : more space. clear boundaries between being a mom and growing a business. time for play. to attract magic. spontaneous travel. a connected community. to feel useful.

Let your list run long. Tune into how you want to feel. Write it down and then let it go and create the space you need to receive. And know you deserve it all.

Glance Back

It’s incredible what can happen in a year, and it is too easy to just move onto the next thing. I am all about giving extra attention anywhere I can in order to create meaning and value in my life. When I stop and look at all that has happened I feel quite powerful and confident in my ability to create whatever it is I want next.

Hiking with Luca up to San Luca

Hiking with Luca up to San Luca

Here are some gems of 2014.

  • I became a mom to a most incredible being, Luca.
  • I listened to my dreams and desires to make things and be creative and began Charm & Magic.
  • We moved to Germany and made amazing, heart centered friends that I miss daily.
  • We went back to Bologna, Italy and ate at some of our favorite restaurants.
  • I hosted a summer yoga series in the park around the corner from our house in Frankfurt.
  • We moved back to Brooklyn and I get to see my grandparents quite often.
  • I am connecting and reconnecting with a most inspiring community here in NYC.

Now it’s you’re turn. Write it down. Leave space for this list grow. Let it be ongoing as you remember all you have accomplished and experienced this past year. Start from the beginning, let it be jumbled, circle back to whatever seems important.

If you want to take it a step further and think about what is next, I highly recommend this free workbook from Alexandra Franzen, who rocks my world with everything she shares and writes.

Then get ready to receive – (here is a mini meditation I made for you + the new year)

Give From the Heart

Posted | 0 comments

When I began Charm & Magic I knew I wanted to be able to support a meaningful cause, but since I am still in the ‘investment phase’ I felt like I couldn’t really give financially at this point.

A few months ago I met an amazing new friend, Eileen, who spent two years living in Africa and is returning to Kenya to take a group of girls, now known as the Girls on Fire, on a leadership camp. Her mission is incredible and her strength and determination to make a difference was so inspiring I really wanted to support this project in some way. So while Eileen was raising money, I was making 19 mini malas for the girls who are about to embark on this life altering journey.

By the time I finished designing + making + packaging these gifts I was completely depleted – but in the very best of ways, and I was reminded how incredibly rewarding it is to give from the heart.

And so I am thrilled that in 2015 Charm & Magic will have the opportunity to partner with The Human Plant Project, an organization offering yoga to underserved communities in NYC! More on that to come.

So I’d like to leave you with two things:

#1. Know that when you purchase a Charm & Magic mini mala you are also supporting these growing organizations.

#2. If you are feeling tight on money this holiday season and still want to give beautiful, meaningful gifts – remember the best ones come from the heart (as corny as that sounds – it’s true!) – you can always make something, bake something, write something, record something, organize something… in a way that only you can do.

Happy Giving!
